Web Reviews on Educational Resources

Web Review I:

1.      http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/
What is it?
This website is a free, online tool that provides an array of free recipes for that is great for use in coursework (planning section).
What I love about bbc.co.uk is its ease of use.
It is easy to navigate around, especially with the help of the quick recipe finder.
In addition, it does not need any installation of software in order to play the videos on cooking demonstrations.
Recipes uploaded in this website have well plated, decorated and coloured food pictures.
The layout and presentation of the specific dish will serve as a great guide to students in deciding what garnishes to choose in improving the whole presentation of the dish prepared.
In addition, step - by - step recipe instructions provided are clear, with unstandable household measurements.  This will minimize unnecessary time wastage and human errors in finding websites to convert unit measures.
It also provides all the common missing elements that recipes from normal food recipes may lack in, such as : preparation time, summary of ingredients required and serving size.
These recipes available will make a good recipe finder website for Food and Nutrition Students
The free videos can be used to reinforce the objectives and concepts of different cooking methods / baking methods.
E.g. One point which I found it really useful is the video demonstration on
Bread - Kneading /Rubbing - in method
Just click the Green Play Button and you can watch how Rubbing in/Kneading is done
Great for Topic on: Key ingredients in a Recipe

+ PLUS

Though this website is a UK website, it does not limits the recipes avaiable to the western/american cusine. It provides a broad spectrum of 19 other cuisines, together with 9 special diets choices and 9 courses for meal preapration to select from.
This site is an all-in-one package.
OH yes, just to add on, the recipes in this website are generally healthy choices, allowing students to make good choices in choices of meal preparation.
The coverage of all the special diets in this website is definitly an advantage as recipes for special diets such as vegan/shell-fish/nut-free/gluten-free could be quite tedious and time-consuming to search for.

Examples of some Food Recipes that commonly searched for in this website

How to intergrate the advantages of this website into the classroom ?
These recipes are also useful in setting exam paper/quizzes to examine students on their proficency in recipe modification.
The videos are perfect for introducing the Food and Nutrition Topic on Key ingredients in a Recipe, be it during normal class lesson/practical lesson.
Instead of hearing and visualizing how each step of pastry methods is being carried out, it will be much easier for students to understand via visual aid.

How to go about doing it?

Deliever the lesson from bbc.co.uk with a projector for the whole class
OR
Set up a Food and Nutrition center on Classroom computers where students can stop by and watch the videos.

TIPs :
  • Show video on the various cooking methods/pastry-making methods before actual practical lesson to facilitate better understanding
So Check out this site, you will be wowed!
Do you feel that this site will be a useful tool as we embark on our teaching career?
Do leave your comments/questions.

Many many thanks.
